Luke Hurley guitarist and singer songwriter from New Zealand.

To Be Perfectly Honest

Honesty is an elusive quality is it not?

“You don’t make money telling the truth”

So what do you do? Confess  to anyone who will listen?

Pray?
Despair?
Deny?

I like the third option. My life in music has been one of a denial of reality in one sense and a keen awareness of it in another. It’s like there are two Lukes. The one who made Make Room and the one who made High Risk.  Working on the new album I discover a hybrid of the two.

The song – Honesty off the Reha album lyrics are below

Well I see you’re pretty young
And you’ve got a fine degree
And you look so beautiful
That you’d make the blind man see

When I saw you – I just knew
That you would be a friend to me
And I would be a friend to you
We could share some honest company

Honesty (honesty) means a lot to me
Honesty (honesty) means a lot to me

Cause a man could fall in love with you
If you gave him half a chance
But I wonder if this love is true
Or is it just romance

Just romance
Just romance

Honesty means a lot to me
Honesty, honesty means a lot to me

Honesty, honestly means a lot to me
Honesty, honestly means a lot to us – yes it does

Yes it does.

I wrote this song in the days when I visited Auckland to get a break from Dunedin. In those days no one busked. One day I was busking in Vulcan Lane  one very quiet mid afternoon in summer. When I say quiet…it was dead and I was playing at the High St end near the hot potato and yoghurt ice cream shop (a very popular lunch spot but it went broke on account of cash being extorted from the business on a daily basis).
A wonderful elderly gentleman was dancing to the music I played one very quiet mid afternoon in summer. When I say quiet…it was dead.

To give you an idea of how conservative Auckland was in those days way back in the mid 80s….The lady in the hot spud shop called the cops and had him arrested. The bottle he had been holding  was confiscated and left with her. She put it in my guitar case probably assuming it was a bottle of turps or something.Taking it out of its brown paper bag I discovered a brand new unopened bottle of Napoleon brandy.

Thank God things have changed. Nowadays you could dance naked  in Vulcan Lane and no one would complain
There was a girl who would often passed by  walking her dog .She was always friendly and appreciated the music. Few there were who did .So  bedazzled was I….and imagined her to be closer to an angel than a human. Young men worship beautiful women and this sometimes inhibits their ability to strike up a meaningful dialogue. Romance was out of the question….her being so perfect and unreachable.Just as well. Probably would hve been big trouble!

In the years since its dawned on me that society rewards  dishonesty. “You don’t make money telling the truth”…and commerce thrives on war.

But I wasn’t to know that then and still feel more drawn to the light than to the darkness but I’m just as much a creature of the night as the next guy…which leads to another song in another blog coming up soon

“If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.”
Virginia Woolf

“The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. “One word of truth outweighs the world.”
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Be safe and please respond if you have a thought for this little guy

The more things change the more they stay the same

Recently recorded at  Roundhead Studio  thanks to Adrian’s sponsorship. It’s a great studio and the mic is like miracle in steel and the curtain of fairy lights makes you sound better. Tony Parker the producer made a clip on his iPhone sampling some of the sounds me and Basant were experimenting with. See clip below.

But it won’t as yet  give you  the sound  from the Neuman 47 -the miracle in steel. As you can see I am playing the SB  guitar subscribers to this blog kindly bought for me. Thanks again, so amazing that you gave me a get out of jail free card. Now i can play like crazy and keep working on this new idea – this punk raga fusion thingy

I shared this link with a musician friend  and his comment was that I am playing the star under the lights and being the big poser. In fact all I was doing was recording and was largely unaware of being “phoned”  ha ha!

Any capture of what you do  can be   branded as  posing if you bother to share it. Better to be  a good boy and play covers in bars playing music that someone else had to do the hard work of popularising ….some would say

The working title of the album is ” the more things change more they stay the same”  …..its a canvas that can hold any song I ever wrote along with any new one.

There is one  song always changing and always staying the same at one in the same time

Deep ay?

One guy tells me all my songs sound the same and that I only know four chords. I take that as an insult. I know only three chords and I am proud to be so harmonically challenged

How about the guy with utterly NO chords. Didn’t do him any harm!

Please write to me here as FB gives me the twitters. My number is  +64 210 259 2919 email lukehurleymusic @ gmail.com (without the spaces)

As always I need to put in a plug about being happy to play at yours and the smaller the gig the better ay? So here it is.

Keep this simple human alive and invite me to play at yours. ok? call me or write to me with your idea.

You can see from the clip that the replacement SB 12 string  guitar eclipses the old stolen one we lost some time ago  but we learned a lot and its looking positive now

Here is a show coming up that could be fun on Sunday afternoon 8th of November –   hope you can make it. East meets West.

east-meets-west concert

If if you prefer I can play a micro gig at yours. Just call me. Talk soon and thanks again

A personal 10 commandments list – Graham Brazier

GrahamB_resizedGraham shared his father’s 10 commandments with me one day in the bookshop and I happened to capture the moment on my phone.

This set of commandments continues the idea of “words to live by” that he mentioned on an earlier visit.

Amazingly in that poem shared earlier is the line

“In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.”

Maybe it is a coincidence but this connects the idea of  wireless /radio and the importance of positive words. Regardless  – having a personal set of words ( or commandments)  to live by is a good thing and should be celebrated.

A captured moment with Billy Bold’s son (see song below) not so long ago.

Here is the Billy Bold song which was first released in 1981. More background over here on audioculture.

Graham Brazier – a Danger to Shipping

The first time I heard of Graham was way back in the day when Hello Sailor was creating a sensation in the same way as the Stones had a decade earlier in the old country. At that time I was living in the city famous for boasting a quarter capacity town hall for none other than the Beatles..again – more than a decade before. I wasn’t there when the Beatles played but I got to see Hello Sailor at the Shoreline all those years later and I have to say they were really something. They sounded like the real thing and had charisma long before Mark Todd had the horse. No pun intended.

Speaking of which – and at this time – I had a friend who called herself Issy and she was well acquainted with the “airline made of snow” to quote Steppenwolf. She told me that she had a mental condition which involved the loss of the will to work and that when she was tasting she and her boyfriend wouldn’t do anything at all and he would not say a word for days on end and it drove her crazy and that’s probably  why she came to live in the city that didn’t succumb to the Beatles….She took me to see Graham play …..

The Shoreline was absolutely packed and Brazier was bigger than Elvis and friend or no friend it was just impossible to get near him. So I didn’t get to meet  him until I opened for his band the Legionaires  at Vic  Orientation many years later and again at the Shoreline in the 80s and a Rock Festival in Te Anau  about a decade ago where I was greeted with conviviality and asked how I was to which I replied   “I’m a danger to shipping”….which was greeted with much hilarity and from that moment I think I became one of his many friends.

If I had the time and saw that the shop was open I visited him cause you just sensed it would not be open next time you passed by….and often it wasn’t and if you pointed this out to him he would always tell you he kept regular hours. At first he was a bit wary of me but in time it was possible to hang out and share a box of dumplings from San Bao next door and listen to his amazing stories few of which were about himself and his life in music but more about writers and his father and the way his father instilled into him the fact that there is an 8th deadly sin……Gossip. I was an offender and he made it perfectly clear that he was very put out. He left a message on my answerphone something like this

“Hey Luke. Graham Brazier here.  I’m not ashamed to put my name before the GCSB.  There’s a message from the past that’s come back to haunt me and i think you may be a protagonist…This is  going back to an incident 14 years ago, so i need to talk to you.. and remembering this my son… gossip is the devils radio i need to talk to you. If you’ve got anything below your belt and above your underpants  come and see me my friend please. I need to talk to you cause this has turned evil. Gossip is the devils radio*.”

“Gossip is the devils radio and gossip is the 8th deadly sin.”

Come and see me…So I did and he forgave me and we in fact became closer friends after that.

A few weeks ago I tried to buy a book off him. He was going to sell it and at the last moment decided instead to lend it to me. He told me that he NEVER lent books and that he wanted it back. I have it still.

At the funeral yesterday it was astonishing to discover that in the early days of his songwriting career Graham liked to do a 20k run before picking up his guitar. He loved nature and walking on the beach and in the hills and believed that if he touched alcohol he wouldn’t be able to stop .

His son spoke of how Graham was not afraid of moving on. “Son…don’t be scared of death. Don’t worry. It’s beautiful and peaceful without pain. Like I’m floating. It’s real nice”, and he didn’t want to come back.

He is happy and he told us not to worry so lets put  the whiskey bottle back in the box marked “props”. Graham don’t need it anymore.

* Eds note: Gossip is the devils radio is a George Harrison song off 1987 album Cloud 9.

Steve Barkman Guitars

The new Steve Barkman 12 string arrived last week.  The guitar is a masterpiece handcrafted by Steve over many months. This is the third generation of the 12 string series. My brother Chris bought the very first one he made and gave it to me. It’s a sensational guitar. Someone with big dollars ought to get Steve to oversee the manufacture of this model cause its a world class instrument with a unique sound.
